You type your business name into Google and get a Yelp page, a directory listing you never claimed, and a competitor who bought an ad on your name. Then you try "AC repair Round Rock," which is the thing you actually sell, and you can't find yourself anywhere. Meanwhile the person who built your website told you it was "SEO optimized" and sent an invoice.

When your website isn't showing up on Google, the first thing to figure out is whether the page is missing from Google's index or is indexed but not appearing for the search you tried. Those are different problems with different fixes. Google Search Console, which is free, can tell you which one you have, and knowing that keeps you from paying someone to fix the wrong one.

## What did you actually search for?

"Not showing up on Google" can mean you don't appear when someone types your exact business name, or that you don't appear when someone types your service and city. It can also mean you're looking for your business in the map results rather than for a page from your website. Each of those points somewhere different.

If your site doesn't come up for your own name, check indexing first. If it comes up for your name but not for "plumber in Pflugerville," Google knows your site exists, and the question becomes whether your service page is indexed and competitive for that search. Write down the two or three searches you care about most before you go further, so you're testing the same thing every time.

## Start with Google Search Console

If someone else manages your website, ask whether Search Console is already set up and request access. Then do three things.

1. **Inspect your most important pages.** Paste your homepage and your main service page into the URL Inspection bar at the top. It tells you whether each page is indexed and, if not, often why.
2. **Check your sitemap.** Open the Sitemaps report and confirm Google could read it and that it includes the pages you want found. A sitemap helps Google discover your pages, but Google's [sitemap documentation](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/sitemaps/overview) says it doesn't guarantee everything in it will be crawled and indexed.
3. **Look at what you already show up for.** In the Performance report, open the Queries and Pages tabs. Impressions mean your site appeared in results for that search. Clicks mean someone clicked through to your website.

That third step is more reliable than searching from your own phone. Google's [guide to how Search works](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/how-search-works) says results depend on things like the searcher's location, language and device, so your site can get impressions for a search you can't reproduce from your kitchen table. Your own searches are still good for seeing what competitors' pages look like, just not as your only evidence.

## How do you quickly check if Google has indexed your website?

If you don't have Search Console access yet, Google's troubleshooting page, [Why is my page missing from Google Search?](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7474347), suggests a rough check. Turn off SafeSearch and search for **site:yourdomain.com** (no space after the colon), or put a full page URL after **site:** to check one page.

If results come back, at least part of your site is indexed. If nothing comes back, don't conclude the worst. Google's [documentation on the site: operator](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/monitor-debug/search-operators/all-search-site) says it doesn't necessarily return every indexed URL, and points you to the URL Inspection tool to confirm. Treat an empty result as a reason to look closer.

## Why would Google not index your website?

Most of the reasons are mundane, which means you can often spot them yourself, even when fixing them properly takes more work.

### Your site or page is new

Google needs time to discover and crawl new pages. After you submit a sitemap or request indexing, its troubleshooting guidance suggests allowing at least a week before you assume something is broken. Treat that as a waiting period before you dig in; Google doesn't promise indexing within a week. If your site went live last Tuesday, you may not have a problem yet.

### Something is telling Google to stay out

Three common blocks work differently. A **noindex** directive tells Google not to include the page in search results. Password protection stops Google from reaching the content at all. A **robots.txt** rule stops Google from crawling the page, but Google's [robots.txt guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/robots/intro) says a blocked page can still end up indexed, for example if other websites link to it, usually showing without a description. In short, robots.txt controls crawling, and noindex controls whether you appear.

Here's one way it goes wrong, as a hypothetical. Your developer builds the new site on a test server and switches on a "discourage search engines" setting so the half-finished version doesn't get indexed. Nobody switches it off at launch, so your finished site is still asking Google to leave it out. Flipping the setting back is quick. Confirming it worked, checking for other blocks and waiting for Google to recrawl take longer.

### Google hasn't found your important pages

Make sure your main service pages are linked from your navigation or homepage and included in your sitemap. A page that only exists because you emailed the link to customers is a page Google may never stumble onto.

### Google crawled the page and passed on it

Not every indexing problem is a technical block. A page can be perfectly accessible and still not get indexed. Google's guide says plainly that it doesn't guarantee it will crawl, index or serve any page. If a page keeps getting skipped, ask whether it mostly duplicates another page, whether it says anything useful, and whether it has a clear job on your site. Requesting indexing over and over doesn't answer any of those questions.

## How to read the Page indexing report

The URL Inspection tool is for one page. The [Page indexing report](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/7440203) shows patterns across the whole site. These are the reasons you're most likely to see, using Google's labels:

- **URL marked 'noindex'**: the page is asking to be left out. Check whether that's intentional.
- **URL blocked by robots.txt**: Google isn't allowed to crawl it. Check whether the rule should apply to that page.
- **Not found (404)**: the page is missing. Check whether it should exist or has a replacement.
- **Server error (5xx)**: your server didn't deliver the page. If it keeps happening, talk to your host.
- **Discovered - currently not indexed**: Google knows the URL but hasn't crawled it yet. Google says this is typically because crawling was expected to overload the site.
- **Crawled - currently not indexed**: Google looked at the page and chose not to index it for now. Look at its content, duplication and purpose.
- **Duplicate without user-selected canonical** and the other duplicate reasons: Google picked another URL as the main version. Check that it picked the one you'd want.

Don't panic at the size of that list. Google says most sites have at least a few unindexed pages and that you shouldn't expect every URL to be indexed. A thank-you page sitting in "not indexed" is fine. Your main service page sitting there is not.

## Indexed but not ranking: why can't you find yourself?

If the page you care about is indexed but doesn't show up for the searches that matter, you've moved from an indexing problem to a ranking problem.

### Your page doesn't say what customers search for

Read your service page next to the search you typed. If customers search "AC repair Round Rock" and your page says "comprehensive residential climate solutions for Central Texas," you've made Google translate your marketing language back into plain English. Put the service and the area you serve in the page title, the main heading and the copy, in the words your customers use.

One IT provider I worked with was an established business in a small local market, with recognizable clients and a strong reputation. But its title tags and headings used generic branding instead of clearly describing the services potential customers were searching for. The business had the credibility. The website just wasn't saying what it did. Before you assume you need more content or more backlinks, check whether your existing service pages explain what you do in your customers' language. I wrote more about that in [why keyword and trend research is your edge](https://theviralmarketingcompany.com/blog/why-relentless-keyword-and-trend-research-is-your-edge).

While you're there, look at your meta descriptions, but know what they're for. They can shape the snippet people see and give them a reason to click. Google said in its [post on meta tags](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag) that it doesn't use the description meta tag in ranking.

### Competing pages answer the customer's questions better

Clear wording gets you in the running. Plenty of pages say "AC repair Round Rock" and still don't show up. Search for your main service and look at what Google chooses. Are the top results individual service pages, directories or detailed guides? Then compare what a customer can learn from those pages with what they can learn from yours:

- Which services are included, and which aren't?
- Which areas do you actually serve?
- What happens after someone calls or fills out the form?
- Is pricing explained, at least as a range, where that's practical?
- Is there evidence you've done this work before?

You don't need to copy every competitor or make your page longer for its own sake. Add what would help a customer decide.

### You're looking at the map, not the website

For "near me" and service-plus-city searches, a lot of the action is in the local results, which come from your Google Business Profile. Google's [local ranking help page](https://support.google.com/business/answer/7091) says those results are based mainly on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known your business is). Prominence is partly based on how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have, and more reviews and positive ratings can help.

So check your category, services, hours, contact details and verification, then look at the businesses showing up ahead of you. Say your profile is complete with eleven reviews, and the competitor down the road has three hundred good ones and plenty of local sites linking to them. Filling in your last few profile fields probably won't close that gap. Google also says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so the work is earning reviews and mentions over time.

## Did you buy, inherit, or move your website?

If you bought a domain or took over a site from someone else, check the **Manual Actions** and **Security Issues** reports in Search Console. A manual action can lower rankings or remove pages, and you'd never see it by looking at the homepage.

If you recently redesigned or changed domains, check what happened to the old URLs. Say "/services/ac-repair" used to bring in calls and now returns a 404. If that content moved, the old address should permanently redirect to the new one. Google's [site move guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/site-move-with-url-changes) says some ranking fluctuation is normal while it recrawls a moved site, so separate an expected dip from redirects that are actually broken.

## What does it cost you to leave this alone?

I won't make up a number for you, because it depends on how customers find your kind of business. But think about the referral. A neighbor recommends you, the person searches your name to get your phone number, and the first thing they see is a directory listing with a competitor's ad next to it. You earned that referral and you may still lose the call.

Then there's everyone who has never heard of you and searches for what you do. If your service pages are missing or buried, you never get to make your case. If you're also wondering why AI tools recommend someone else, I wrote about [how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT](https://theviralmarketingcompany.com/blog/how-to-get-your-business-recommended-by-chatgpt).

## What to check this week

1. Write down your priority searches: your business name and your two most important services plus your city.
2. Open Search Console and inspect your homepage and main service page.
3. Confirm your sitemap was read and includes your important pages.
4. In the Page indexing report, look for unintended noindex or robots.txt blocks, 404s and server errors on pages customers need.
5. In the Performance report, see which searches and pages already get impressions and clicks.
6. Read your page titles, headings and service copy as a customer would. Do they say what you do and where?
7. For local searches, review your Google Business Profile and compare it with the businesses ahead of you.
8. If you inherited or moved the site, check Manual Actions, Security Issues and your old URLs.
9. After fixing a block, confirm the fix, request indexing and give it at least a week.

None of that requires an agency. If you find an accidental noindex directive, you may be able to remove it yourself, and that removes one barrier. Whether the page then earns a spot for the searches you care about is the next question.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does it take Google to index a new website?

There's no guaranteed timeline. Google suggests allowing at least a week after you submit a sitemap or request indexing before assuming something is wrong. In the meantime, make sure the pages are reachable and not blocked.

### Why does my site show up for my business name but not my services?

Your site is probably indexed but not competitive for those searches. Confirm the service page itself is indexed, then compare its title, headings and substance with the pages that do rank, and for map results, your Business Profile and reviews with the businesses ahead of you.

### Do I need to blog regularly to show up on Google?

No. Google's [guidance on helpful content](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/creating-helpful-content) says adding a lot of new content just to make a site seem fresh won't help. For many service businesses, a sharper service page, a relevant case study or a short video explaining a service will do more than another blog post written to fill the calendar.

### Can I pay Google to rank higher?

Not in the unpaid results. Google's guide to how Search works says it doesn't accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher. You can buy Google Ads, but those are sponsored placements, separate from where your site ranks organically.

## Want help figuring out what to fix first?

The checks above can help you spot an obvious block. They won't always tell you which problem deserves your time first, or why the same competitor keeps showing up ahead of you.

That's what the free 30-minute SEO review is for. You bring the searches you care about. Your homepage and up to two priority service pages get reviewed, along with your Google Business Profile where it's relevant and a quick comparison with two businesses that appear for those searches. If you can share Search Console access, your indexing, sitemap status and search performance get reviewed too.

You leave with three prioritized next steps and a short written recap, so you know where your next hour or next dollar should go. The review is recommendations only; you can make the changes yourself or talk about getting help.
