Build an ad in Meta Ads Manager today and, before you hit publish, Meta has probably already lined up a few changes to it.

Usually nothing dramatic. A brightness adjustment. A crop so a square image fits Reels. A short AI-written summary of your offer placed under the creative. A comment from your post surfaced below the ad. Sometimes a rewritten headline inside your image.

These are Advantage+ creative enhancements, and the list keeps growing. Meta's Help Center describes dozens of options, including AI-assisted features. In October 2026, Meta expanded its AI creative capabilities, including static-to-video generation and Ads Creative Studio. [See the Advertising Week 2026 announcement coverage.](https://www.relevantaudience.com/meta/meta-advertising-week-new-york-2026-ad-tools/)

Most advice on these settings lands in one of two places. Turn everything on because Meta's machine learning knows better than you. Or turn everything off because you want control.

Both of those are defaults, not decisions.

A better way to decide is to ask three narrower questions. Does this enhancement change how my ad fits a placement, or does it change what my ad says? What does it cost me if Meta gets it wrong? And can my account actually measure whether it helped?

That last question depends heavily on budget, and it is the one almost nobody talks about.

## What Are Advantage+ Creative Enhancements?

Quick answer: Advantage+ creative enhancements are automatic modifications Meta applies to your images, videos, and text when delivering ads. Meta serves different versions to different people based on predicted response. Some only resize or adjust your media; others rewrite your copy or generate new images, text, music, and video. Controls vary by enhancement and campaign, and some may be on by default. [Jon Loomer's Advantage+ creative guide](https://www.jonloomer.com/advantage-plus-creative-facebook-ads/) documents how these options have evolved.

Meta's own description is worth reading closely. It tries to preserve the core message of your campaign, but the media and text you upload may be adjusted to improve performance. The version a given person sees can vary by person and placement.

For practical purposes, the enhancements fall into three groups. This is my grouping, not Meta's, but it is the one that matters for decision-making:

- **Fit enhancements** change how your existing creative renders: brightness and contrast, visual touch-ups that crop or expand an image to 4:5 or 9:16, video touch-ups, and catalog image touch-ups.
- **Surfacing enhancements** pull in material that already exists: relevant comments, catalog products, product tags, content from your website, and store locations.
- **Rewriting and generating enhancements** create things you never wrote or approved: text improvements, media-text rewriting, summaries, overlays, generated images, music, animation, and static-to-video.

The risk profile generally climbs as you move down that list. A bad crop is usually an aesthetic problem. A rewritten promise is a business problem. Even a crop can matter when it hides a disclaimer, price, or logo, so preview the actual placement.

## Which Enhancements Are On by Default?

This is murkier than it should be.

Some enhancements can be enabled by default, depending on the campaign type, creative format, account, and current rollout. Practitioner guides sometimes report broader defaults than Meta publicly documents. Treat those reports as observations, not universal rules.

It doesn't matter much either way, because the fix is the same: check every new ad. Some settings may appear in Advanced preview rather than the first Enhancements screen. If you only check one screen, you can miss what's running.

Meta has also introduced persistent opt-out preferences for future campaigns. That's worth reviewing in your account, but it isn't a guarantee that every creative feature is permanently disabled everywhere. The account-level *Test new creative features* option is a separate control for experimental features. Don't confuse that setting with every individual enhancement toggle. [Marketing Brew reported on Meta's opt-out changes.](https://www.marketingbrew.com/stories/2026/04/07/meta-ai-ad-creation)

## The Measurement Problem Nobody Mentions

When enhancements are on, Ads Manager reports performance in aggregate across versions served. An ad might indicate which enhancements are eligible or applied, but that isn't the same as a clean performance breakdown comparing your original against every variation. [Loomer's explanation of Advantage+ creative](https://www.jonloomer.com/advantage-plus-creative-facebook-ads/) gives useful context for the reporting limitations.

So when someone tells you "Advantage+ creative improved our results," ask how they know. If they didn't run a controlled comparison, results may have improved while enhancements were active along with whatever else changed that month.

Meta has published modest average lift figures for particular creative tools and placements. Treat those as Meta-reported averages, not a promise for your account. Even a genuine 2% or 3% effect is exactly the kind most individual advertisers cannot measure reliably.

One more piece of context: a Meta spokesperson told [Marketing Brew](https://www.marketingbrew.com/stories/2026/04/07/meta-ai-ad-creation) that advertisers were not penalized in delivery for opting out of AI features. That's Meta's stated position, not an independently verified guarantee of equivalent performance in every account. The choice should be about performance and risk, not fear of displeasing an algorithm.

## Why Budget Changes the Answer

Here's the arithmetic most enhancement guides skip.

Say you run a lead campaign with a 5% landing-page conversion rate, and you want to know whether an enhancement improves that conversion rate by 10%, from 5.0% to 5.5%. A standard two-sample test at 95% confidence and 80% power needs roughly 31,000 clicks per version to reliably detect that difference.

At a $2 CPC, that's about $62,000 per arm. Roughly $125,000 to test one enhancement once.

And that's for a 10% relative lift. If the actual effect is closer to 2% or 3%, the sample requirement is vastly higher.

The numbers will differ for your account. Effects on CTR or cost per landing-page view can sometimes be detected sooner, but improved click metrics do not prove improved sales. A clean split test and a sufficiently large sample are different things.

To make the scale concrete, an account generating 50 leads a week at a 5% conversion rate receives around 1,000 clicks weekly. Split evenly, each test arm gets 500 clicks. At roughly 31,000 clicks per arm, detecting that 10% relative conversion-rate improvement could take more than a year at that traffic level. That's rarely a useful experiment.

Most small and mid-sized accounts will struggle to reliably measure small enhancement-level conversion effects. That changes how you should decide.

**If you can't measure the upside, decide based on the downside.** Leave on the enhancements where the worst case is a slightly odd crop, after checking previews. Turn off ones where the worst case is a promise you don't make, a claim your compliance team never approved, or Christmas music on a summer campaign. Those failures cost you even when a platform average is positive.

This is not only theoretical. [Business Insider reported](https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-ai-generating-bizarre-ads-advantage-plus-2025-10) that a consultant for furniture brand Kirruna said AI-generated ad imagery misrepresented product materials and prompted customer complaints and refunds. That's a reported case, not evidence that this happens commonly. It illustrates why an inaccurate variation can cause damage that a lower CPL won't capture.

Larger accounts can make a different choice. If you have enough relevant conversion volume to power a controlled test, compare the same creative with and without a specific enhancement, then let the outcome data inform the decision. For another example of why volume changes account decisions, see our [Meta ad set budget capacity guide](https://theviralmarketingcompany.com/blog/how-many-meta-ad-sets-can-your-budget-actually-support).

## Advantage+ Creative Enhancements Worth Leaving On

For most accounts, these have relatively low downside and can help creative fit placements you might not have built for:

- **Adjust brightness and contrast.** Cosmetic and usually doesn't touch the message. The exception is a brand with strict color requirements.
- **Visual touch-ups (images).** Crops or expands images to fit placements. Preview the 9:16 version. Better yet, supply your own 4:5 and 9:16 assets.
- **Relevant comments.** Surfaces real comments. Low risk if you're watching the comment section; turn it off where comments could mislead or damage trust.
- **Catalog basics.** Image touch-ups and dynamic media can use assets and data you supply. Their usefulness depends on feed quality. A messy feed gets amplified, not fixed.
- **Highlight carousel card.** Potentially useful unless your carousel tells a story in sequence.

## Enhancements to Test When You Can Measure

These can plausibly help, and they can plausibly hurt. Where you have sufficient volume, test them one at a time, with a predetermined outcome and decision rule. Where you don't, don't pretend a short experiment will detect a small conversion effect. Review previews and decide whether you'd be comfortable with every variation running.

- **Video touch-ups.** Crops or expands video to 9:16 or 4:5. Risky when a speaker's face or key action sits near the edge.
- **Add animation and static-to-video.** Turns a still image into motion. Can earn attention in Reels; can also look cheap. Highly dependent on the image.
- **Enhance CTA.** May add or alter CTA presentation. Fine for generic offers; risky when exact wording matters.
- **Translations.** Useful if you serve multilingual audiences. Have a fluent reviewer check the message.
- **Show spotlights and Reveal details over time.** May pull text and images from your website. They're only as good as the source page.
- **Product tags and catalog items.** Useful for ecommerce with a clean feed.

## Enhancements to Turn Off by Default

These are the ones most likely to change what your ad says. That's where the damage can happen, and where it's hardest to isolate the effect in reporting.

- **Text improvements.** Moves or rearranges ad text across placements. If your copy has a deliberate sequence, this can undo it.
- **Enhance media text.** May change words embedded in the creative. If you enable it, review the variants and supply brand guidance where available.
- **Show summaries.** Generates a summary of selling points you didn't write. You may not see every version a person receives.
- **Add overlays.** Places text over visual creative and can disrupt a deliberately designed ad.
- **Music.** An automatically chosen or generated track can clash with your brand or context. Supply your own audio when tone matters.
- **Test new creative features at the account level.** Leave this off unless you consciously want experimental features across eligible ads.

## Lead Gen and Service Businesses Have an Extra Reason for Caution

If you sell a product online and optimize toward purchases, a misleading headline can eventually affect purchase results, but you'll still see those results *in aggregate*, blended with the other creative versions and campaign changes.

Lead generation is different. Unless you're sending lead outcomes back to Meta from your CRM and optimizing for those downstream events, Meta may only see the form fill. It won't know from that event alone whether the prospect answered the phone, showed up for an appointment, or bought anything.

Now imagine Show summaries or text generation describes a paid service as "free," or implies a same-day appointment you can't offer. CPL might drop. Lead quality drops further. Your sales team spends the next month calling people who expected something else.

In Ads Manager, that can look like a win.

This is why platform CPA has to be connected to close rate and customer economics before you can judge any change, enhancements included. For service businesses, I'd keep message-changing enhancements off by default unless you're deliberately reviewing them and tracking lead quality by ad. Better yet, feed qualified-lead and closed-sale outcomes back through your CRM and the [Meta Conversions API](https://developers.facebook.com/docs/marketing-api/conversions-api/), then configure an appropriate downstream optimization. Better signals don't remove the need to review claims, but they improve what Meta can learn from.

When CPA changes, first determine whether it's an auction, click, landing-page, or lead-quality problem. Our [Meta Ads CPA diagnostic guide](https://theviralmarketingcompany.com/blog/why-meta-ads-cpa-is-rising) goes deeper on that process.

Advertisers in regulated categories may face additional eligibility and claim requirements. Regardless of feature availability, anything that changes material claims deserves human review.

## What About Meta's AI Creative Tools?

Meta's generative tools go beyond adjusting ads. Image generation creates alternative imagery, text generation proposes copy, static-to-video turns images into short videos, and Ads Creative Studio expands creative production options. Meta has also discussed image-generation model improvements and testing brand-specific creative memory. Feature availability varies by account and rollout.

Used deliberately, these can be useful. Used as unchecked defaults, they can become a liability.

I'd use AI to produce options I can review, not assume every variation it serves is something I would have approved.

Text generation as a drafting tool is fine. Read the options, keep what is accurate, and ship it. Image generation can be useful when production capacity is a bottleneck and you need more versions of a proven concept. Static-to-video can extend the life of a winning still image into Reels.

Where it gets weaker is when people treat AI variations as creative diversity. Since Meta introduced Andromeda, many practitioners have argued that genuinely different creative concepts matter more than small changes to one ad. That's a practitioner interpretation, not a guaranteed platform rule. Ten AI-generated versions of one hook are still one hook. They might fit additional placements. They won't tell you whether a different angle, offer, or customer motivation would work better. Read our [analysis of Meta's changing delivery system](https://theviralmarketingcompany.com/blog/the-new-physics-of-meta-ads) for the broader context.

Budget matters here too. A large account can sustain a bigger creative pipeline and test more ideas. A small account usually gets more from one genuinely new concept grounded in the customer's problem than from fifteen variants of the existing one.

Ads created or heavily edited with certain generative tools may also carry AI information labels. If that matters to your audience, factor it in.

## How to Check What's Actually Running

1. In the ad creative, open Enhancements and review each available toggle.
2. Open Advanced preview and check the Advantage+ creative options shown for each relevant placement.
3. Review the default settings and any persistent opt-out preferences available in your account.
4. For live ads, inspect Advantage+ creative in the ad editor, and revisit the settings when duplicating ads.
5. In Advertising settings, see whether *Test new creative features* is enabled. This is distinct from ordinary enhancement controls.
6. Check live ads periodically. Practitioners have reported some adjustments reappearing after being disabled. Those reports don't establish a platform-wide rate, but they're enough reason not to rely solely on old screenshots or saved assumptions.

An ad preview is only a sample of possible rendering. Judge the worst plausible version, not just the best one. [This practitioner review of unwanted creative changes](https://adlibrary.com/posts/advantage-plus-creative-changes) illustrates what to watch for.

## A Practical Default Based on Budget

The right threshold depends on conversion volume, effect size, and the metric you want to test more than raw spend, so treat these as working categories, not universal cutoffs.

**Low-volume accounts.** If you're getting fewer than roughly 50 conversions a week, you're unlikely to reliably detect small enhancement-level conversion improvements. Keep useful fit enhancements after previewing them, turn off message-changing defaults, and put most of your effort into offers, creative concepts, and follow-up quality.

**Middle-volume accounts.** Keep the same baseline. You may have enough volume to assess upstream outcomes, such as CTR or cost per landing-page view, or to catch an enhancement causing a very large performance decline. Don't call a higher CTR a conversion win, and don't run a small-lift purchase or lead-conversion test that would need months or years of traffic. Estimate the sample and duration before launching. If it isn't practical, use risk, previews, and business judgment instead.

**High-volume accounts.** When you have enough qualified conversions to power a test for the effect that matters, you can compare enhancements against your own business outcomes. You still need human review on anything that changes what you're promising.

None of this is about being for or against automation. Meta can be useful at adapting creative to people and placements. It doesn't necessarily know what your business can promise, what your brand sounds like, or what your sales team deals with after the click.

Let it handle the first part when it earns that trust. Keep the second part yours.
